Visit of Foreign Ambassadors to the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games in Korea
- Governor Kim Jin-tae's Meetings Provide an Opportunity for Support and Promotion of Gangwon as a Global City
[Digital Gangwon] Governor Kim Jin-tae of Gangwon Special Autonomous Province held meetings with foreign ambassadors during their visit to the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games on January 19th and 20th, demonstrating solidarity and support for the success of the Olympic event and promoting Gangwon as a global city.
On the morning of the 19th, Governor Kim Jin-tae met with Tamara Mohoveni, the Canadian Ambassador, at the Gangneung Comprehensive Situation Room. During the meeting, Governor Kim expressed gratitude for Canada's support and encouragement for the 78 athletes participating in 12 disciplines from Canada, a powerhouse in winter sports. In a special gesture, a large placard conveying a message of support for the "2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games" and celebrating the "50th Anniversary of the Sisterhood Exchange between Gangwon and Alberta" was displayed on the exterior wall of the Canadian Embassy in Korea.
Later the same day, in an afternoon meeting with Philippe Berthoux, the French Ambassador, Governor Kim extended his support to the French delegation participating in the four disciplines of the Games. He also wished for the success of the upcoming "2024 Paris Summer Olympics" and hoped for a remarkable performance from South Korean swimmer Hwang Sun-woo, a prominent figure in Korean swimming.
In response, Ambassador Philippe Berthoux shared a photo on his social media account featuring the mascots of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, "Mongcho," and the Paris Olympics mascot, "Freeju," sitting side by side against the backdrop of Gyeongbokgung Palace. He expressed joy and youthful energy, expressing hope that the positive vibes of the "2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games" would lead to the success of the "2024 Paris Olympics." Additionally, he conveyed the intention to integrate the success of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games with France's candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
Finally, on the morning of the 20th, Governor Kim Jin-tae had a breakfast meeting with Colin Crooks, the British Ambassador. During the meeting, they discussed the participation of 39 British athletes in 11 disciplines and expressed their anticipation for these athletes to create joyful memories while showcasing their skills in Korea.
Furthermore, on January 27th, Governor Kim Jin-tae is scheduled to meet with Maria Castillo Fernandez, the Ambassador of the European Union, aiming to intensify diplomatic efforts in promoting the event on the global stage.
Seizing the opportunity presented by the Olympics, Governor Kim Jin-tae plans to expand diplomatic ties beyond exchanges with sister cities, leveraging Gangwon's strengths in biotechnology, energy industries, beautiful traditional culture, and tourism resources to advance towards becoming a "Global City of Future Industries."
